Frequently Asked Questions

What is Telehealth therapy?

Telehealth refers to any health-related service that is provided through the phone, internet, or video. At Empowered Emotions Psychology, all services are provided through Telehealth. While most services are provided through videoconferencing, we are also able to offer therapy through phone calls.

What are the benefits of using Telehealth therapy?

Sometimes, individuals find that barriers to accessing mental health support are due to:

  • Inability to find time in a busy schedule

  • Life factors (including child care or work demands)

  • Fear of opening Pandora's box of emotions

  • Uncertainty of therapy

  • Social stigma and/or internalized stigma about seeking help.

While Telehealth doesn't solve all barriers associated with accessing therapy, it does make therapy more:

  • Accessible

  • Convenient

  • Flexible

Telehealth allows access to therapy that ensures privacy for all clients and is flexible to your schedule.

Many people find that therapy, whether accessed online or face-to-face, leads to important positive changes in their lives. Many people view therapy as a place to talk about their problems, while that is true, therapy can also help lead to new perspectives, acquiring or strengthening skills, increasing self-awareness, self-confidence, and improving your relationships.

What should I consider before engaging in my first Telehealth therapy session?

To ensure your privacy, make sure you:

  • Have a quiet space that is relatively distraction-free

  • Close the door to your office or bedroom so that the conversation can remain private

  • Make sure your device is plugged in or fully charged

  • If it feels right for you, feel free to come with a notebook and pen.

  • Come with an open heart and open mind to begin your healing journey.

What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?

A mental health professional can help you:

  • Approach your situation in a new way

  • Teach you new skills

  • Gain different perspectives

  • Listen to you without judgment or expectations

  • Help you listen to yourself

  • Counselling is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.”

  • If your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, and you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.

What do I have to do in sessions?

Because each person has different issues and goals for counselling, it will be different depending on the individual. However, most sessions include talking about your history, patterns, and inner relationships. We will also integrate skills and strategies, including mindfulness, coping skills, and compassionate self-talk. Nonetheless, I tailor my therapeutic approach to your specific needs.

How long will it take?

Everyone’s circumstances are unique and the length of time counselling can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counselling in the first place.

I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?

I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication will be crucial to your success. This looks different for everyone, but many people benefit from practicing journaling and reflecting on our conversations in between sessions. We will work together to identify specific areas to reflect on or practices to integrate into your routine.
